No Task Unworthy by Mandy Johnson

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him”

Colossians 1:16 (ESV).

Food on the floor. Toys out of place. Books scattered across our coffee table.

“Just another day at the office,” I thought, as I silently swept up my toddler’s cereal crumbs while he slept peacefully in his crib. There were moments throughout my first year of motherhood that felt about as exciting as waiting in line at the DMV, and this was one of them. Whether you’re a parent or not, I’m sure you’ve been in a familiar place of feeling like life is less than exciting.

“I should be doing bigger, more important things, right? Like closing deals, saving lives, or writing books?”E ach toy I put away and crumb I swept up was accompanied by a new feeling of discontent. As I continued to organize the clutter in our home, the Holy Spirit kindly intervened and spoke truth over my negative attitude toward these seemingly ordinary daily duties.

He simply placed this question on my heart: Is anything mundane in the eyes of the Lord?

In Colossians 1:16 (ESV), we read: “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

If Jesus, in all His radiance, power, and glory, created all things, then why would any task He places before us be anything but ordinary? This scripture, written by the apostle Paul from a prison cell, reminds us to remember who created us and why we were created—not by a boring God who asks us to do meaningless things with our lives, but by a radiant God whose image we bear no matter what we’re doing!

Friend, if your day-to-day tasks feel boring and mundane like they did for me that day, remember our abundant creator who gives us endless opportunities to shine.

When you sit behind your computer screen on another video call, you have an opportunity to shine the light of Christ.

When you spread creamy peanut butter and grape jelly on two pieces of bread for a tiny belly, you have an opportunity to nourish someone’s body.

When you spend time decluttering your home, you have an opportunity to create an organized, safe environment for anyone who walks inside.

Each of our tasks are holy, designed not to simply check a box, but to spread the love of Christ. When our days begin to run together, may we remember Paul’s words in Colossians. There is radiance waiting to be discovered in our daily tasks, even the mundane ones, when we allow the Holy Spirit to remind us of our divine purpose in and through them.

Prayer: God, thank you for the tasks you’ve placed before us today. Teach us how to shepherd our duties, big and small, and to approach each day with a grateful heart. Amen.

Discussion Questions:

1. What daily tasks feel most mundane to you? Ask God to reveal His radiance and purpose in them so you can approach each one with a grateful heart.

2. How can you bear the image of Christ to those around you today given the unique opportunities He’s placed in front of you?
